C3 Corvette Headlight Rebuild Kit

Corvette Dome Light Circuit Boards

Corvettes from 1978 to 1989 have a courtesy or dome light timer which leaves the interior lights on for a short period of time after the last door is closed. On a late C3, the courtesy light timer is located below the right A-pillar and behind the dashboard trim. On an early C4 Corvette, the dome light timer is behind the right side of the instrument panel.

Zip Corvette sells replacement circuit boards for both the 1978-1982 C3 and 1984-1989 C4 timers. With both C3 and C4 Corvettes, once you get the timer module removed and disconnected, you simply open the timer, remove the existing burned-out circuit board and replace it with Zip’s new circuit board.

If you are buying a board, there is also a choice of two light shut-off strategies. Zip Corvette’s standard dome light timer board has the stock delay on light shut-off after the last door is closed. Zip, also, has a no-delay circuit board which eliminates the delay, ie: when the last door closes, the courtesy lights go out immediately.

C4 Corvette Circuit Board Update – 2/7/11

1984-1989 C4 Corvettes could have three different interior lamp delay modules installed in them.  The modules can be quickly identified by the part number on the outside of the housing.

Every week we have at least one customer call and ask us this question, “How do I remove the knob and rod from my headlight switch?” It is a very common problem that everyone encounters the first time they try to do this.

First you will need to pull the stalk on your Corvette’s headlight switch all the way out as if you are turning on the lights. Then look on the switch body for a button (red arrow below). This button allows the headlight rod and knob to  separate from the headlight switch. With the switch separated from the knob and rod you can easily remove the headlight switch assembly from your old dash and replace it with a new one.

Corvette Headlights

Malfunctioning headlights and/or wiper doors are very common on 1968-1982 Corvettes. Though the system may seem to be very complicated at first glance, it is actually very simple and can be troubleshooted by any “do-it-yourselfer” with basic hand tools and one free afternoon. Usually dry or cracked vacuum hoses and actuator seals are your culprits. If they are original, they have experienced a great deal of heat from the engine over many years. The troubleshooting guide goes into great detail about the vacuum system and will eliminate just about any frustration brought on by malfunctioning wiper doors and headlights.

How do you adjust the “back” of the headlights on a 1977? I know where the front adjustment is, but mine rubs on the back when they are opened. I have several manuals and have looked everywhere on the car I can think of. Can you help?

Answer: There is no adjustment for the back of your Corvette’s headlights. If your headlights are rubbing the surrounding fiberglass, we would first suggest unbolting the headlights and changing their position within the opening. The bolts mounting the frame to the front and rear headlight bars on the fiberglass have some adjustment in them, loosen the bolts and reposition the headlight housing in the opening. An additional issue may be worn out or misaligned side bushings where the headlight housing mounts into the headlight frame. These bushings are plastic and once cracked and brittle, will allow the housing to move around in the frame. Verify whether the bushings are broken and if not, loosen the bolts and reposition the headlight housing within the frame. There is adjustment in those bolts as well that will allow you to control the headlight housing position.
